MAWA’s aim is to advance medical science and improve human health without using animals or animal products in medical research. MAWA has taken a leading role in animal-free science by providing funding to universities and research institutions throughout Australia and working cooperatively and productively with the scientific research community to facilitate the development and promotion of human-relevant non-animal methods.

MAWA provides research grants, travel grants, equipment grants, fellowships, scholarships, conference bursaries, support for tissue banks, and sponsorships for training courses, significant seminars and conferences. MAWA works in partnership with the Australian National University (ANU) where it has established the Replacing Animals in Medical Research Fund (RAMR). MAWA also facilitates third-party funding for all these initiatives to increase opportunities for researchers and students to replace the use of animals in medical research.
